Big Bend National Park is an American national park located in West Texas, bordering Mexico. The park has four major ecosystems: Chihuahuan Desert, Rocky Mountains, Rio Grande, and Desert. The park covers 801,163 acres and is the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert landscapes and wildlife in the United States.

The first humans to occupy the area of present-day Big Bend National Park were Paleo-Indians who arrived in the region some 10,000 years ago. These early nomadic hunter-gatherers left little evidence of their occupation, but some artifacts have been found in the park, including a 9,000-year-old spear point.

The next major wave of human occupation came with the arrival of the Apache and Comanche peoples in the 1500s. These Native American groups used the Big Bend region as a hunting ground and occasionally clashed with each other. The Apache were eventually driven out by the Comanche, who dominated the area until the 1860s.

In the late 1800s, Anglo-American settlers began moving into the Big Bend region, attracted by the promise of ranching and farming. These settlers had a significant impact on the landscape, building roads and fences, digging wells, and grazing cattle. The arrival of the railroad in the early 1900s brought even more settlers and further development.

The Big Bend region was formally established as a national park in 1944. Since then, it has become a popular destination for hikers, campers, and nature lovers.
